Hannahwood

Activities & Social Life

Here at Hannahwood we have an extensive range of activities available for everybody to enjoy!

In the social area we have a bar and lounge area complete with pool table, table football, Wii and a vast collection of games and DVDs. We often have parties and social events and like to open up the bar where we serve special mocktails and beverages particularly for our themed evenings!

Hannahwood also has a large Arts and Crafts room which has an array of tools to enable the young adults to create pieces as independently as possible. We have an enterprise group who produce items to be sold in our local Hannah shops as well as craft fairs in the community including bottle art, canvas paintings, recycled art pieces including the use of bottle tops, jars and much more!

We also have a computer suite complete with gadgets designed to enable people to use different programmes on the computer – whether it may be designing, producing posters, producing work for college – there are many different tools available to do this.

Our Music and Activities room has a huge collection of different musical instruments for everyone to enjoy as well as some fantastic equipment that gives people the opportunity to control the music and lights in the room!

There are a wide range of daily activities in the music and activities room. Depending on what the young adults here express that they want to do these includes games on the interactive screens, updating their skills in switch work and using communication tools, inflatable games, sensory games, dance workshops, music sensory nature hunts and more. We also like to do themed activities such as carol singing at Christmas, Pumpkin carving at Halloween and egg hunts/decorating at Easter.

During the evenings the music and activities room plays host to a variety of activities including social nights where we like to have quizzes, karaoke, discos, live music, bingo and themed party nights!

We also hold lads and ladies nights which range from poker and games, film and popcorn nights, pamper evenings, watching the footy and loads more!

During the week everyone has the opportunity to have a 121 music therapy session where they can use the different instruments or just enjoy listening to them – it’s completely up to them! These sessions are a great opportunity to use intensive interaction and just enjoy the one on one time in the music room.

As well as these fantastic activities on offer we also have a state of the art multi-sensory room where everybody gets the opportunity to have a one to one session with their enabler each week as well as having access during the evenings and weekends. This room is fantastic for the users to make choices about what they would like to control as well as providing a lovely relaxing environment – particularly useful after a long day! The 121 sensory sessions are individualised to suit each person and their needs to gain the most out of their session.

Working in collaboration with our friends at Seale-Hayne we attend weekly group activities include Gardening, Pet Therapy and Bushcraft Skills. These groups provide such therapeutic value to the people who attend as well as gaining skills and learning about the things they are involved with.

The young adults also get the opportunity to go sailing throughout the summer period and like to try different outdoor activities. We recently made friends with Obama the pony who has taken us out on many trips to the beach and rough terrain that aren’t usually wheelchair accessible – a fantastic experience for everybody!

We also take part in forestry activities at Burrator with the South West Lakes Trust twice per month. Here everybody enjoys taking part in different nature based activities and tasks and a favourite has to be toasting marshmallows on the fire!

As well as having sessions with external organisations each month we also get the opportunity to go to lots of local events. We are always invited to Volksfest each year as well as other events such as the Uphill speed racing championships at Wiscombe Park and the Funky Llama Festivals and Club nights.

As well as attending local events we have the opportunity to go on lots of fantastic trips out! Whether it be trips to the theatre, Exeter racecourse, shopping, cinema, bowling, laser tag, Gala Bingo, the aquarium, going out for meals or to the pub! … whatever people want to do we do our very best to go and do it!
