Mayor of Newton Abbot, Mike Hocking, joined local schoolchildren who were taking part in Kids in Museums Takeover Day at Seale-Hayne on Friday. Hannahs were working with Newton Abbot and Great Western Railway Museum as part of a nationwide event which enabled young people to become involved for a day in the activities of their local museums.
Nearly 40 children from Haytor View Primary School and some design students from Coombeshead Academy Sixth Form came to Seale-Hayne to take part in arts activities in the new Experience Warehouse. Having spent the morning at Newton Abbot Museum, the group spent the afternoon at Seale-Hayne working with one of Hannahs resident artists on an art project based on their experience in the museum and the WW1 memorabilia they had seen there.
Hannahs Arts Generator, Rachel Farrell, said “Hannahs at Seale-Hayne were delighted to collaborate on the Kids in Museums Takeover Day event with Newton Abbot Museum. This was a fantastic opportunity for the young people involved to experience first-hand and make direct links between the rich heritage of Newton Abbot at the Museum and the WW1 history of Seale-Hayne. Students from Haytor View Primary and Coombeshead Academy were given the opportunity of working in the newly opened Experience Warehouse to consolidate their experiences at the museum and become ‘curators for the day‘”.
