My Hannahs, Your Hannahs

A collaborative project that has evolved out of a mentoring relationship between two painter's working at Hannah's, who are inspired by the landscape here at Seale-Hayne. From Syria with love

From Syria with Love is a very poignant exhibition which will be on show in the Gallery from 16-19 January. Organised by Baraa Ehsaan Kouja, a Syrian student at Exeter University, the exhibition will include 25 paintings and drawings by Syrian children aged 12-18 who are currently living in Al-Abrar refugee camp.

Louise Courtnell

Originally from Plymouth, Louise Courtnell is a full-time figurative painter, living and working at Whitsand Bay, South-East Cornwall. In 2003 she began Project Lydos, a series of 50 oil paintings of two generations of local people from the nearby twin fishing villages of Kingsand and Cawsand, all born between 1910 and 1944.

Jerwood Makers Open

Jerwood Makers Open is a major showcase of new work by emerging artists, each of whom are given £7500 to create new work. Following an exhibition at the Jerwood Space in London, we were thrilled to welcome this distinguished collection on the first stop of a national tour. London-based artists Revital Cohen and Tuur Van Balen created a series of hand-craftedLED signs, while FleaFollyArchitects created a fictional universe using the themes and characters from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as a metaphor for our digital age. Other highlights included porcelain sculptures from Hitomi Hosono, glassworks from Shelley James and even a life-sized ceramic façade of a British pub by Matthew Raw.

Summer of Art - Digital Invasion

This hi-tech exhibition was a celebration of digital art from film to photography and augmented reality to animation. The groundbreaking centrepiece was Living Data by artist Michael Takeo Magruder, which featured a constantly evolving and changing selection of digitally hybrid paintings, sculptures, videos and installations created by tapping into everything from trending social media topics to weather patterns and global financial markets to news stories. Other events over the summer included open air cinema, a 48 Hour Film Challenge, animation workshops, a global radio link-up and live music events.

Robert Lenkiewicz

We were delighted to welcome a private collection of paintings owned by Lenkiewicz’s family, including 28 works that had never been seen in public before. Family Matters explored the life behind the artist and provided a reflection on the people and relationships that shaped his world, including his Jewish upbringing and his life as an immigrant. Lenkiewicz famously had three wives, many lovers and eleven children and this exhibition was curated by members of this extended family. Family Matters included pictures of his children, his partners and his mother painted throughout the various stages of his private life. Two former pupils (Nahem Shoa and Louise Courtnell) provided fascinating talks and portrait demonstrations respectively.

Vicki Boulter

Local artist Vicki hosted an exhibition of her Avant Garde work – a series of powerful images created through a mixed medium of photography and digital art. Vicki’s awards have included the PSA (Photographic Society of America) Gold Medal and the Silver Royal Photographic Society Medal for her creative photography. Her children’s fantasy portraits proved particularly popular and she even published her first children’s book during the exhibition. Called ‘I Can be Anything’ it featured the subjects transported to a world from their own imaginations. The book also included poems by the children or their parents.

Summer of Art - Urban Takeover

Hannahs witnessed a metropolitan invasion with a whole summer of street art, including an exhibition on loan from the V&A with pieces from the likes of Banksy, Blek le rat, Jamie Hewlett, Pure Evil and D’face. We also commissioned pieces by Lucy Sparrow (giant textile cans of spray paint), Jiwon Oh (an elaborate illustration of Hannahs which can still be seen outside our main gallery) and Silent Hobo (the huge graffiti illustration on the Taiko Centre). In the quad we gained a phone box, art car and even a zebra crossing, while EE helped us create an Augmented Reality Trail featuring art from local schools and colleges that was completely invisible to the naked eye, but could be viewed on smart phones and tablets.

Matisse - Drawing with Scissors

The French painter, sculptor and designer, Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was one of the 20th century’s most influential artists. His vibrant works are celebrated for their extraordinary richness and luminosity of colour. Matisse: Drawing with Scissors, a Hayward Touring exhibition from the Southbank Centre, featured 35 lithographic prints of the famous cut-outs, produced in the last four years of his life, when the artist was confined to his bed. It included many of his iconic images, such as The Snail and the Blue Nudes. To launch the exhibition we hosted a French-themed launch party called Une Bonne Soiree.

Michael Craig-Martin

Hayward Touring is bringing Michael Craig-Martin to Hannahs at Seale-Hayne, Newton Abbot in Devon. Establishing itself as a leading art venue in the South West, Hannahs has gone into partnership with London’s Hayward Gallery to present this exhibition of work by Michael Craig-Martin, one of the world’s most influential conceptual artists. Opening on 7 July, Alphabet is a series of 26 prints that in vivid monochrome play with the idea of letters and everyday objects.
