Tugboats and Dolphins take on massive fundraising challenge

A group from Tugboats and Dolphins CIC has completed a massive challenge in aid of Dame Hannahs. The three fundraisers with no previous experience of cycling long distances took on a 1000 mile bike ride from Ivybridge in Devon to Santander in Spain over 10 days.

Averaging over 100 miles a day, they battled injuries, mechanical failures, and even cycled through a red storm warning with 60mph winds and hail – all fuelled by the thought of the difference they could make to the young people at Dame Hannahs. Despite the adverse conditions during this gruelling challenge they successfully achieved their goal.

Tugboats and Dolphins raise funds for charities through extreme physical challenges and this year they decided to fundraise for the refurbishment of the Dame Hannahs sensory room as the charity is close to their hearts. The sensory room is a safe, stimulating space that can dramatically improve quality of life for the young people at Dame Hannahs. This year the fundraisers have also taken on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, ice baths and cycling challenges as well as holding a games night.

Dame Hannahs Community Engagement Lead, Debbie Lumsdon “Everyone at Dame Hannahs is incredibly grateful to Tugboats and Dolphins for taking on such a huge challenge to raise funds for our sensory room refurbishment. We all know how tough the bike ride was and we are totally in awe of them. We really appreciate their ongoing efforts to raise more funds so that they can reach their target.”

Cyclist Jordan Kelevra said “This wasn’t just about the miles – it was about what those miles mean. Between us we had no cycling experience before this. We had to rely on teamwork and a lot of sore legs to get us to Spain – all for a cause we deeply believe in”.

Jordan’s fiancée Edyta, who is a nurse at Dame Hannahs, said “I think I underestimated how hard it was going to be from the organisation side of things from driving across France and meeting with them at certain points with the support vehicle to trying to find cheap places to sleep. We had to pull together to make it through and look after each other. For me being a nurse at Dame Hannahs is not just a job and it means so much to me that the guys see why I love it so much and want to push themselves to the limit to raise money and support what we do. It’s also lovely to see the young adults socialising and having fun with us at Tugboats while we fundraise!”

The group plan to continue with further fundraising challenges to try and reach their target of £10,000. Currently they are halfway there so please help them reach their target.
